Children and young people today live in trying times - the pandemic itself, the duration and the consequences. Life is of course full of unpredictable events and happenings and young people are resilient and they are also 'the future'.
Children and young people should be treated with the respect they deserve. Right now in Midlothian there is a lot going on concerning the rights of children and young people. Following from a meeting held on the 29th of August, where councillors were in agreement that 'The United Nations convention on the rights of the child' should be adhered to and action taken to reflect this.
The Midlothian Childrens Rights report 2020 - 2023 gained approval with many key achievements included in the forty page report. Children and young peoples needs and opinions have been acted upon, with impressive measures taken to hear what they have to say.
The aim is to support the young people giving them every chance to succeed. Some of the key achievements from the report are;
- working with young people to prevent youth homelessness
- A sum of £10.5 million invested in a project which allows pupils from primary one to sixth year to obtain an i-pad or chrome book.
- Having rights respecting coordinators in all schools - so far 25 schools are registered.
- Establishing a building back better team to deal with learning gaps as a result of the impact of the pandemic.
For the future there will be 'Taking a rights based approach' in October where young people will address their rights and explain their views as part of a Midlothian council conference of Education professionals.
Our children and young people are precious, they are the stepping stones that guide us. If anyone is worth investing in - it is them.
