Here in Midlothian vapes have been a cause for concern above the usual risk factors - the Midlothian council trading standards officers have seized an amount of 2,300 vapes within the past year. Eleven retailers are indicated with the principle reason being the contents: too much liquid nicotine containing e liquid. When worked out this is the same as smoking hundreds
of cigarettes. There is a special plant where a number of 700 vapes have been sent and will be partly destroyed and partly recycled.
Legal proceedings have begun and the remaining vapes will be the evidence. Up to between six to twenty four months of a sentence can be ordered for those convicted.
What do we really know about vaping?
It is possible that views are mixed based on misinformation. Initially the vape was presented as a method to actually stop smoking as it is considered less toxic and therefore less harmful to us.
Vape shops are frequent and teenagers are attracted to vaping for its own sake - so there goes the notion of a safer way to smoke/wean off nicotine.
It appears that vaping is on the increase and profits being made at the price of our teenager's health being put at risk.
How far we have come: Personally I cannot help but think how far we have come in Scotland with regards smoking - indoor and public smoking has been addressed, also passive smoking and imagery is presented showing how harmful it can be.
In a way it is like putting out the fire, reassuring the children then passing them some matches.
The scents and flavours play into a 'sweetie' notion for the youth of today. Marketing ploys have no interest or concern about the effects and teenagers can get hooked quickly.
Anyone with information should contact the trading standards team.
