Our Features

at the heart of the matter...

01

eco - friendly way of being

Taking care of our beautiful planet is a cause which many people feel they are at the heart of - whether giving up plastic bags or participating in the 'new coat' scheme, where you simply choose a coat and can donate too. We all have a role to play no matter how small.

02

true to the heart of midlothian

This brilliant part of the U.K. has plenty of things going on where we can participate and find our own niche.  What does the typical Midlothian lady seek out?  Many services; to nail salons to a quiet walk or somewhere reasonably priced.  A good coffee at the local bakers will do for me but sometimes a wee afternoon tea might be a good idea...

03

cultural diversity

With a host of different backgrounds, experiences and outlooks, it is interesting to hear the array of languages spoken.  Midlothian feels like a wee melting pot highlighting the uniqueness of us all.

04

Technology social media

Living through this technological 'revolution' sometimes I feel left behind and struggling with 'technophobia' now and again...but everything has advanced so quickly with almost everything at the touch of a button these days which is wonderful but lets not lose our face to face interactions.

Let’s talk

In Midlothian from the 4th to the 9th of March the Equality Midlothian week will take place with events being held in Mayfield, Penicuik, Gorebridge and throughout the region!

The purpose of this interesting and fun week is to raise awareness of equality issues and promote a more equal Midlothian. Cultural awareness, disability, mental health, kinship care, domestic abuse and LGBT issues are all part of the event.

We often hear about these important matters in a negative light - for example: hostility, financial strain and unfairness. Rightly so as such incidences and attitudes must be challenged however the week aims to add some celebration into the mix especially with one of the highlights being the Midlothian Mela event which will be held in Gorebridge on Saturday the 9th of March where there will be culture, food and entertainment! This family friendly day is situated at 'The Gorebridge Beacon'.

Seen but not heard - Understanding eating disorders

This event will take place on Wednesday the 6th of March at Lawfield Primary School in Mayfield and booking is essential through CAPS advocacy. The times are 10.30am to 2.00pm

Health in Mind will support an event in Cultural Awareness in Mental Health at Penicuik town hall on the 5th of March from 9.30am to 4.30pm.

This is just a sample of what will be going on. Equality is not just a buzz word or a politically correct stance - it is an attitude, a mind set and an openness towards what may be unfamiliar or unknown. It is also a realization that 'difference' and 'diversity' is a great thing! So whether you or someone close is 'coming out', 'speaks a different language' or 'is struggling with mental health issues' - the key is to become informed, find what support/contacts are available and above all seek out the common feature - humanity and celebrate it as we have far more similarities than differences.

Equality week promises to be something rather special - don't miss out and 'spread the word'!
