Our canine friends have a hold on us, for better of worse. With a sense of smell forty times more powerful than us humans they can be our own private detectives - plus some take themselves very seriously in the role of defender of 'the house'.

In Scotland the most popular breed is the golden retriever, known for their loyalty. Not too far behind is the French bulldog for its distinctiveness.

What do our dog choices say about us? In general they reflect our personalities like an extension of the self almost.

These admirable creatures can compliment us in many ways, playfulness, walking, swimming and simply as a quiet companion.

Dogs have been working for many years such as sheep dogs and labradors supporting people with visual impairments.

More recently there are 'emotional support dogs' assisting people with anxiety and other conditions.

People can actually be assessed to recieve an ESA - an emotional support animal by the NHS.

The value that can be added to someone's life is significant when simple everyday tasks are more manageable - from errands to socialising.

PSD's are used to support people with psychiatric difficulties.

We say mans best friend for the loyalty that our canines show for us. But dogs can go that step further and become our four legged/or other, therapeutic allies for life.
